Dysport

What is Dysport®?

Dysport® is an injection that is performed in the office that blocks the signal from the nerves to the muscles, resulting in reduction of muscle activity which temporarily prevents contractions of muscles that cause frown lines. Many factors can cause frown lines, such as repetitive facial movements in the brow region resulting in vertical lines between the eyebrows. These brow lines are dynamic, which means they occur when the person moves their face. Repeated facial movements such as squinting and frowning, may cause frown lines to develop at a younger age.

Dysport® can be used to treat the dynamic lines from the contraction of facial muscles, but will not result in an improvement in lines caused by sun damage. Dysport® can be used to target the muscles that result in lines such as frown lines, lines between the eyebrows, and forehead lines, while allowing the untreated facial muscles to work normally. This will allow the patient to look natural and still be able to form normal facial expressions. Dysport® received FDA approval as a wrinkle treatment in 2009. Dysport® is similar to Botox Cosmetic, it may be potentially faster or longer lasting and may also spread farther from the injection site.

Who is a Good Candidate for Dysport®?

Patients who are good candidates for treatment with Dysport® at the Mack Center present with dynamic lines on the face, which are lines secondary to contraction of the facial muscles. Typically, these lines will worsen with time, and may occur at a younger age for patients who squint or frown on a repetitive basis.

What are Realistic Expectations with Dysport®?

For patients undergoing Dysport® at the Mack Center, a realistic expectation would be to observe an improvement in the lines of motion, particularly in the crow’s feet, glabella region (lines between the eyebrows) and also the horizontal lines in the forehead.

How Long Does it Take a Patient to Recover?

Dysport® treatments are performed in the office. Typically, ice packs are applied following the treatment. Oftentimes, patients are sent home with ice packs to apply at home as needed. The patient is asked not to rub or massage the areas, and the patient can return to normal activities or work that same day.

When Will a Patient Start to Notice Results from the Dysport® Treatment?

Patients will typically notice results from a Dysport® treatment anywhere from 1 – 7 days following treatment, with the average being 3 days.

What are the Common Reasons why a Patient Wants Dysport®?

Patients typically present to the Mack Center with concerns regarding their skin wrinkles, and loss of volume in the face. Patients who are good candidates for Dysport® would be patients who notice lines with movement or motion in the face. These are called dynamic wrinkles. Common areas would be the crow’s feet, glabella region (region between the eyebrows) and the forehead.
