6 REASONS YOU SHOULD WEAR SUNSCREEN DAILY

This month we launched the Mack Center Challenge, our challenge to you to wear sunscreen every day for the next 365 days. Whether you want to take the challenge to avoid prematurely aging your skin, because you want to set a good example for your kids, or because you want to live a long, healthy, cancer-free life, wearing sunscreen daily is one of the best decisions you can make to protect your health. Need more convincing? Check out these 6 reasons you should wear sunscreen every day.

  1. To maintain younger looking skin.

Have you ever noticed the number of Florida residents who have leathery, lined, age-spotted skin? Unfortunately, too many of us have made the mistake in our youth of living too in the present and not thinking about the long term damage we are doing by not wearing adequate sun protection. The truth is, the sun does far more damage to the skin than the actual aging process. Protect your skin against aging, long term, by applying an SPF of 30 or higher every morning.

  1. To reduce your risk of skin cancer.

Wearing sunscreen daily, even on cloudy days, significantly decreases the likelihood of developing skin cancer. This is especially true of melanoma, which is the type of skin cancer that most often kills women between the ages of 20 and 29.

  1. Because it’s easier to burn in the water.

We all love the beach during the summer. Unfortunately, because of the light reflecting off the water it’s actually easier to burn when you’re in and around the water. Fortunately, sunscreen in waterproof so it can withstand your fun in the surf. Just remember  that you’ll still need to reapply regularly.

  1. Because you can tan while avoiding the burn.

Even if you’re reapplying sunscreen regularly, chances are you’ll still get a small tan. However, think about what kind of burn you would have if you weren’t applying sunscreen regularly. Yikes!

  1. It’s safer than wearing a white shirt.

Unless you’re wearing a shirt that is designed to provide protection from the sun, your plain cotton t-shirt is probably not going to be provide much, if any, protection from the sun. And keep in mind, any protection it does provide actually decreases when it’s wet, so wearing a “swim shirt” is not a good substitute for sunscreen.

  1. Because you want to set a good example for others.

This is especially true if you have kids. Lead by example and show them the importance of protecting their health by wearing sunscreen daily.
