A HISTORY OF MASCARA

Did you know that we have been enhancing our eyelashes in the United States for almost one hundred years? In 1917, Maybelline launched its first mascara product, made of coal and Vaseline. Director D.W. Smith is credited with creating the first set of false eyelashes in 1916. He wanted actress Seena Owen to have lashes “that brushed her cheeks.”

We were not the first to enhance our eyes, however.

Mascara in Ancient Egypt

Eye makeup has had a long history in ancient Egypt, where both men and women were using eye makeup as early as 4000 BC. Records from that time refer to a substance called kohl that was used to darken lashes, eyes and brows. At that time it wasn’t used as a cosmetic, but rather a way to ward off evil spirits and protect the soul. Conversely, Kohl was used on the European continent largely as a cosmetic, but fell into disuse after the fall of the Roman Empire.

As you can see, for centuries civilization has been trying to enhance their eyes. However, we have come a long way from having to use coal and Vaseline to enhance our lashes. In 1957, Helena Rubinstein packaged mascara in a tube to be sold with a brush. That brush was eventually modified into what we know today.

Modern Day Lashes

Thanks to modern technology, advancements are still being made to improve the appearance of lashes. The most innovative product available today is Latisse®.

Latisse® is a prescription treatment designed to grow eyelashes, making them longer, thicker and darker. It actually increases the number of overall lash hairs. While individual results may vary, a clinical trial of Latisse® results in 106% fuller lashes, 25% darker lashes and 18% darker lashes on average patients after 16 weeks of treatment.

Latisse® is believed to prolong the active growth phase although the exact way it works is unknown. It is the only treatment approved by the FDA for growing eyelashes.

Can anyone use Latisse®?

Most people can use Latisse® with no problems. However, you should not use it if you are allergic to one of its ingredients, if you have a history of eye pressure problems, are currently taking medication for eye pressure problems, or if you have risk factors for glaucoma.
