BOTOX VS. DYSPORT

Botox has become a household name in America, especially now that it has been established as a treatment for non-cosmetic problems, such as migraines or excessive sweating. With millions of Botox procedures performed every year and the increasing number of applications, there is no question that it’s secured its place in every aesthetic physician’s office.

However, several years ago Botox met its match for anti-wrinkle competitors with Dysport.

Both Botox and Dysport have been used in the United States for years and have high safety profiles. Both can be used on the face as well as other parts of the body and both must be injected every three to six months.

Studies have been conducted in an attempt to determine which cosmetic procedure works better, however no definitive conclusion was reached. In most double-blind clinical studies, both the doctor and patient were unable to tell the results apart.

A study conducted by triple board certified, celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Ramtin Kassir found that while very similar, differences were observed in the duration that it took for the wrinkles to improve, that a greater number of patients saw quicker onset action with Dysport. When checking the difference between Dysport and Botox at the three month mark, the response rates from patients were essentially equivalent, although he did notice that they were higher at four and five months with Dysport.

While many agree that Dysport has a slightly quicker onset, the duration the treatment lasts is still being debated and studied. Dysport does diffuse more, which could be an advantage in some areas of the face or a disadvantage in others.

Ultimately, it’s more important who is injecting your Botox or Dysport than which product you are using. Mistakes are made and bad results are achieved because of the people doing the injection, not the product itself. The injection technique is what determines the results.
