DOES KYBELLA REALLY MELT AWAY FAT?

You may have heard of the newest injectable, Kybella, a revolutionary new treatment for “double chins.” In the past, if you wanted to do something about your double chin, the only option was a surgical procedure. However, the FDA has just recently approved Kybella for melting away that stubborn double chin fat.

So how does it work?

Well, first of all, Kybella doesn’t melt away fat the way that you melt a stick of butter in the microwave. A better visualization would be bursting a water balloon with acid. The injectable disrupts the fat cell membrane, destroying it, and the fat cell releases its contents. The body then metabolizes the fatty contents as it normally would.

This isn’t a new concept

While Kybella is brand new to the US, the concept has actually been around for decades. Unfortunately, people were making their own cocktails and injecting them with many adverse effects. Those injectables contained other acids, other than the deoxycholic acid that’s used in Kybella, and even herbal extracts. None of the concoctions had undergone clinical trials or demonstrated that they were actually effective.

What happens to the excess skin after the fat melts away?

Keep in mind that loose skin is actually a side effect that can occur with liposuction too and in cases where the skin isn’t elastic enough, the liposuction may be paired with a neck lift.

This is why you should only receive Kybella treatments from trained healthcare professionals, who will be screening for patients for have excessive skin that could result in an aesthetically undesirable outcome once the fat has been melted away.
