KYBELLA VERSUS NECK LIFT: WHICH IS FOR ME?

It wasn’t so long ago that a neck lift was your only option if you wanted to get rid of a double chin. While diet can help, there are many people with excellent diets who still have to deal with the dreaded double chin. For them, they had two options: get a neck lift or get really good at positioning yourself in photographs so the double chin wasn’t obvious.

However, when the FDA approved Kybella as a treatment for submental fat, also known as the double chin, suddenly people had a non-invasive option.

So how is a neck lift different than a double chin? And who are the best candidates for each treatment?

What is Kybella?

Before we can help you understand how each of these treatments is different, it’s important to know how Kybella works, in the first place!

Kybella is a non-surgical injectable treatment that has been approved by the FDA for treating moderate to severe fat on the upper neck, fat that’s commonly referred to as the double chin. This drug contains a naturally occurring molecule that eats away at fat. When the injections are performed properly, all of the other non-fat cells are left healthy and intact.

Kybella vs. Neck Lift

Even though they may have the same goal in mind, Kybella and neck lifts are two very different treatments.

The most obvious difference is that one is non-surgical and the other is a surgical treatment. During a Kybella treatment, the doctor injects deoxycholic acid into the submental fat below your chin using very fine needles. During the weeks following the procedure, the acid dissolves the fat and your double chin begins to “melt” away. More than one treatment may be necessary to achieve optimum results.

A neck lift, on the other hand, is way more involved. Not only does it remove the submental fat but it also corrects the muscle and removes any excess skin.

After a Kybella treatment you may experience some swelling and tenderness for a few days. Far shorter than the two weeks you can expect to need recovering from a neck lift.

The verdict

If fat is the only issue and you don’t want to face surgery, Kybella is the best choice for you. However, if you have a lot of loose skin under your chin, the surgical procedure will be necessary to remove the excess skin. That said, only your physician can make this determination.
