IS TECHNOLOGY HURTING YOUR SKIN?

How far are you from your cell phone right now? Are you watching television with your laptop or tablet in front of you? Most of us are “plugged in” at almost all times. We are easy to reach and have fast access to information at the touch of a button. And while all of these modern conveniences are great, they do pose an interesting question: what does all this time in front of a screen do to our skin?

Longer workdays mean more stress.

20 years ago when you left work at the end of the day, your day was done. Today, workdays can last as long as you’re awake. We’re responding to emails and working from home morning, noon, and night thanks to modern technological advancements. And while all this technology may SEEM convenient, it’s wreaking havoc on our stress levels.

Stress in general is harmful for the body. It can disrupt sleeping patterns, making us look more tired, and increase the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol can cause breakouts and can activate skin conditions like Eczema or Rosacea.

And while a simple Botox injection can reduce those stress lines between your brows, it’s still essential to find a way to manage the stress of being “plugged in” at all times.

Facial strain from staring at small screens.

In addition to extending our working hours, smart phones have another damaging side effect: facial strain from staring at those tiny screens all day. Perhaps this will be somewhat alleviated with the release of the larger iPhone 6, however, staring at our tiny computers (otherwise known as smart phones) all day can strain our facial features and cause premature wrinkling.

These wrinkles can be easily rectified with the light use of Botox; however, with the continued overuse of technology, this problem is not likely to go away anytime soon.

Have you noticed an increase in eye strain or wrinkles from staring at your iPhone too much? Do you limit technology to avoid these risks?
