If you have sensitive skin, chances are you’ve done a lot of research over the years on products that will help you care for it. The best solution, of course, is to speak to your physician (or come to us!) for advice on the best products and skin care regimen for sensitive skin. However, here are a few tips that should help you out in the meantime.
What skin care products should I use or not use?
As mentioned, it’s best to talk to your doctor first. That said, patients with sensitive skin should, in general, always be using gentle products specifically designed for sensitive skin types. Avoid products with fragrance (regardless of how good they may smell) and also with artificial color, since they can cause potential reactions.
What if I’m trying out a new product?
Always, always, always do a test run first on a small, inconspicuous patch of skin, like behind your ear. Wait at least 24 hours for any signs of irritation. If your skin is especially sensitive then do a second test run on a patch next to your eye. If you’re still all clear after 24 hours it’s safe to say that you’re okay to move forward with the product.
How will environmental factors affect my sensitive skin?
Extreme environmental factors affect all skin types, not just sensitive skin, which means it’s incredibly important to protect your skin when you’re outside in more extreme temperatures. Avoid taking hot showers (stick to warm water, please) or keeping hour house too warm during the winter. Also make sure to run a humidifier (if you’re in a dryer climate). And don’t forget your sunscreen! It’s important to wear broad spectrum sunscreen all year long, even if it’s cold or cloudy outside.
In the summer, try to minimize exposure to damaging sunlight, especially during the peak hours. Yes, you do need some sunshine to be healthy, but a little goes a long way!
Is there anything else I can do to combat the elements?
Moisturize like crazy! Sensitive skin is more vulnerable to the elements and if you dutifully moisturize both morning and night you’ll be able to better protect your skin from water loss and maintain a healthy barrier from environmental factors like pollution and wind.
