HOW YOUNG IS TOO YOUNG FOR DERMAL FILLERS?

Teenage girls everywhere (and admittedly adults to), LOVE the Kardashian clan. The latest craze to hit Instagram, however, is all about Kylie Jenner’s lips. Young girls everywhere are going to extremes to try to emulate Kylie’s pouty look, even unsafe extremes.

Very young girls, even significantly younger than Kylie who is only 17, are participating in the #KylieJennerChallenge. They are battering their mouths to look more like Kylie and emulate her famous pout. Many of the participants are using shot glasses and sucking the air out of the glass, creating a vacuum, intentionally bruising their mouths to give the lips a swollen look. However, using the shot glass as a vacuum can break the glass under the pressure and cause injuries that can even require stitches.

Very recently Kylie Jenner admitted that her pout isn’t all natural…that she’s receiving dermal fillers…at seventeen.

We recently had a 20-year old woman reach out to us, inquiring whether she is too young to begin using dermal fillers.

Both of these events are indicative of a growing trend towards cosmetic enhancements at young ages.

Our thoughts? Is the 20 year old too young?

No, the 20s aren’t too young for fillers, BUT it should be done VERY conservatively since she is young. Typically the lips start to thin in the late 20s, but the signs only become visible in our late thirties. While there is definitely nothing wrong with preventative maintenance in your 20s, no one under the age of 18 should be getting any kind of cosmetic procedure done unless there is a specific cosmetic defect and the procedure has been discussed at length with the physician.

In 17-year-old Kylie’s case, her lips haven’t remotely begun to thin. In fact, she hasn’t even stopped growing yet. Her decision to opt for fillers is a reminder that growing numbers are using these procedures to enhance natural attributes to ridiculous proportions.

Have you noticed this new trend towards fuller lips? Were you familiar with the #KyleJennerChallenge?
